Q u o t e:
Point being, to many people (myself included) this development isn’t being driven by the story. Have you seen anything progressing towards the Nelfs accepting magic use in their society?
Kisirani wrote:
This would be because the announcements came before the initial story development in game. We’ve had that planned for some time.

Q u o t e:
I’d like to draw your attention to why we want some improvements, we have nothing to use in our RP except a handful of empty inns, and level 80 gearsets. And most of us are finding it hard to put RP together with those resources only.

If you’d like to discuss this, please don’t resort to hyperbole. This statement is quite far from the truth in all respects.
I do appreciate those who have answered thus far. I may not respond again, but we’re out there reading.

The screenshot has been linked several times in this thread already, but I’d like to reinforce that we’re perfectly aware of the way Night Elf society has viewed arcane magic over the years.
We are similarly aware that Night Elf Mages have been in the game since patch 1.3.

What would you consider content for role players?
This is an honest question, but it comes with a caveat.
We consider the playerbase as a whole when we implement content. Ultimately, whatever we implement "for role players" would be there for everyone else, too, and thus we have to look at what someone who does not role play would get out of it as well.

Q u o t e:
why give us heirlooms in the first place then?
Bornakk wrote:
To help level from 1 to 80. These items help a huge deal in this aspect so for the one purchase you can get a lot of mileage out of them already.
Q u o t e:
the whole game changes at max level anyway, and thats when you start putting effort into your gear, versus just the mindset of leveling up.
I’m not sure what you mean by this, could you explain in more detail?

Q u o t e:
Any thoughts on letting them go to 85 after, say, a couple of months or so? I’m guessing there will just be different heirloom gear to unlock at 85 though…
Bornakk wrote:
Note, you are asking just for thoughts here, so in that sense, yes, we have thought of this, we have also thought of providing new heirloom items that must be earned at level 85. There are a lot of ways to go with this, nothing has been determined though.

I currently heirloom items specifically state that they go from levels 1 to 80 so we don’t currently plan to make the currently available items auto-update to go to level 85 in the next expansion.
As for the experience gain, nothing is set in stone yet, but I think it makes sense that we won’t want players to get a 20% exp bonus when leveling to 85.

Q u o t e:
It has been stated that the race change feature will probably restrict changing to the two new races at first. What about changing to new race / class combinations? For example, when Cataclysm launches, will I be able to immediately use the feature to switch my gnome mage to a night elf?
Bornakk wrote:
Just like any restrictions that may or may not be imposed on the goblin/worgen changes, it is a possibility that we won’t want the first night elf mage to level 85 to be one that started at level 80. This is strictly speculation at this point as we will need to wait until we are closer to launching the next expansion to have these types of things hammered out.

Q u o t e:
I noticed alot of the panel speakers said "we would leave a little bit of ourselves in Northrend", upon retruning to the old world , should I be reading between the lines here, take it literally like we’ll all come back without our arms and legs, or should I not think too much about it?

Yep, the explanation for NE Mages was quite sad.
"Um, we thought it would be cool to have Night Elves be Mages because they should have no business being Mages. Lawl."
And then they stick this crud on some intern in the lore department. "Give us a reason. Doesn’t matter if it makes sense."
Crygil wrote:
Actually, I remember Metzen replying with a more lore oriented answer. The night elf could be 10,000 years old and remember the ways of magic and the arcane. After all, night elves were originally magic users themselves.
